July Sewing Day and Sewing Night

This month’s Sewing meetings were very popular with lots of members braving the weather to attend. There was a lot going on even without a shop in attendance.

A major attraction was the display of some fabulous quilts from the Blackboy Hill Quilters group. There was plenty of opportunity to admire the quilts and it was wonderful to have so many of the quilters in attendance.

The Blackboy Hill Quilters also supplied the lovely morning tea and evening supper. With Cathie’s guidance the members of the group ran a very enjoyable show ‘n’ tell that featured many of their quilts in addition to those from other WAQA members. Hearing a few tidbits about the friendship and challenge quilts from the quilters themselves was great. A big thankyou to the Blackboy Hill Quilters for a lovely time.

It was also lovely to see the finished President’s quilt made up from all the members’ blocks. Can you spot yours?

Quilt Displays at WAQA Meetings

WAQA is required to hold a number of General Meetings in order to provide an update to members on the status of the Association and allow for questions by the members on the workings of the Association.

At the general meeting held in the first week in June, in addition to the update from the President, the new WAQA constitution was made available for members’ scrutiny and comment.

Members were also treated to a presentation on some of the Anniversary Quilts from the WAQA Collection which were on show.

At the general meeting held in July (under COVID restrictions), the President provided an update on the status of the Association and then called for a vote on the new WAQA constitution. Thanks to the 50 members for attending and happily for the WAQA committee the new constitution was passed unanimously. Next step is for the Commissioner to approve the constitution.

A feature of the evening was a presentation by Pat Forster on the QuiltWest Best of Show Quilts, with many of them on display for viewing up close. Look out for the article in the next QQ for more information and pictures of these quilts.

The last general meeting for 2021 will be on 21 September at Sewing day, in the boardroom from 11:30am to 12:00pm. No special quilt display for that meeting, but plenty of quilts to see at the regular Show and Tell.

BYO Machine Night – Additional Information

Just to let you know the first rule of BYO Machine Night is that you do NOT have to bring a Machine. If you like doing handwork, whether it is applique, piecing, quilting or sewing, you are very welcome to attend.

If you would like to bring your machine, then please do so, as there will be power cords available and plenty of tables (set up in a different manner to Sewing Day and Sewing Night).

If neither of those options work for you, but you have a quilt to sandwich, then bring that along, as the table tennis table will be available to use and provides a large flat surface.

As an added bonus for this event Phil (WAQA Beginners’ Convenor) will be on hand to give help and advice to any newbies to patchwork and quilting, plus anyone else who wants to improve their skills. The beginners’ daytime group have recently been working on their straight line quilting and some free motion basics which is producing great results…Any questions contact Phil: waqabegs@gmail.com

Bring your own mug, as tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own dinner, especially if you are coming straight from work. Cost is $6 cash or card.

So come along and join fellow members on Wednesday night 4 August and 1 September for 3 hours at Stirling Adriatic Centre starting at 6:30pm.

Soup for the Quilters at Judging Weekend

Whilst having a bowl of soup for lunch today, I realised that this time last week I was heading to SAC to help out with setting up for the QuiltWest Judging Weekend. It was an incredibly busy weekend, with members braving the cold weather to turn up and help out with getting approximately 170 quilts photographed and judged.

The soup provided by Lesley Warren and Gwen Parry for lunch on Saturday was just what everyone needed to warm up on a very very cold day.

There was not one, but three choices of soup available, with some people having a cup of each of the soups, and others going for second helpings. Recipes were requested and are listed below (I’ve made the Moroccan Tomato & Red Lentil Soup – so easy and just love it)

A very big thankyou to Lesley and Gwen for providing the hot soup on the day.

Biggest Morning Tea/Evening Supper Fundraiser

Last week the Great Expectations quilting group held a Biggest Morning Tea and Biggest Evening Supper at Sewing Day/Sewing Night as a Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Care WA. $1713.60 was raised which was an amazing amount from both events.

The members of the quilting group, Great Expectations and myself would like to say a very big thankyou to everyone who helped make this a success.

In particular, Lesley Warren & Gwen Parry for running the lucky dips,

Cathy Gregg for coordinating the kitchen, all the ladies who donated food for the morning tea and

the owners of the tea cosy to bring a little cheer.  Also a big thankyou to Jocelyne Leath who came up with the tea cosy idea.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Follow ups to Pop-Ups

One of the activities available for members at the Sewing Meetings are Pop-Ups. A pop-up is a short 10-20 minute demonstration by a WAQA member of a technique, product or item to make. Sometimes instructions are provided so members can try out the technique or make the item.

At the May meetings, Gwen did a demonstration on how to make a book cover. There was a lot of interest from the members attending and so it was just wonderful at the June Sewing Day to see the six completed book covers that Helen Smith made.

At the April meetings, Phil did a demonstration on easy sew squares. Everyone attending was amazed at the accuracy that could be achieved in sewing squares together. Chris Walsh tried out this technique for the quilt top she brought to the Beginners Group (I just loved it, especially the colour)

The pop-up at the June meeting was presented by Gwen Parry and she demonstrated how to make a Breast Pillow. The pattern for the pillow is included here and I’m looking forward to seeing how many pillows turn up next month.
